The University of Belgrade–Faculty of Agriculture has tradition in science and education since 1919. Nowadays, the activities cover teaching and research in: crop science, fruit and viticulture science, phytomedicine, animal science, soil management, agricultural engineering, food technology and agricultural economics. Departments of Plant Pathology and Entomology possess the expertise in using the newest techniques for detection and characterization of plant harmful organisms as well as studying of their biology, epidemiology, and control. Laboratories for Phytobacteriology and Entomology are accredited by Serbian Plant Protection Directorate for diagnostic procedures, monitoring and surveillance programs for Xylella fastidiosa and Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum, as well as for corresponding insect vector species. Faculty of forestry is the oldest institution in the Balkans dealing with education and research in Forestry Sciences. It was founded in 1920 within the Faculty of Agriculture, and became independent institution in 1949. The Department of Forest Protection is, amongst the research groups in the Western Balkans, the leading research centre in this field. The Faculty of Forestry has led many national projects studying broad range of diseases and processes of tree decline, and influence of climate changes on forest ecosystems.
ROLE IN THE PROJECT
The Faculty of Agriculture team will conduct surveillance and monitoring of Xf and CaLsol on potential hosts as well as corresponding insect vectors. The efficacy of contemporary and new pathogen detection methods will be validated to facilitate early pathogen interception and prevention of spread. Biology and life cycle of the vectors will be monitored in order to determine their role in the epidemiology and design the best control strategy. Faculty of Forestry team will be responsible for the pathogens threatening forest ecosystems. Monitoring of Hp in forests neighboring BiH will be priority. Special attention will be drawn to spread risk in areas with higher summer temperatures, which may suppress disease symptoms and influence disease spread. Study of Phytophthora diversity in forest ecosystems as well as pathogenicity tests on woody hosts will be performed.
