PROFILE

The Business Economics (BEC) group of the Wageningen University holds a strong position in interdisciplinary research with key areas, such as food supply chain economics, bio-economic modeling, and economics of animal health, food safety and plant health. Also, BEC is active in measuring and modeling performance and risk management of agro-supply chains and farms. Research is commissioned and funded by the Dutch government, the EU, non-governmental organizations, food processors, wholesalers, feed companies, pharmaceutical companies as well as banks, insurance companies and agricultural accountants.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT

WU will coordinate WP 8 focusing on Plant disease risk assessment and support for plant health decision-making. Pest risk analysis (PRA) is a cornerstone for international trade regulation and the installment of safeguards for European plant health and competitive agriculture. PRA is developing more and more in a scientific profession in which quantitative models are used to assess risks of entry, establishment and spread, and in which sound economic tools are needed to assess economic consequences. Furthermore, risks to the environment need to be considered, as well as the impacts of climate changes and changes in land use and cropping systems. These developments call for innovations in PRA methods to which this workpackage will contribute.

WU will be involved in the following work packages: WP8, WP10, WP11
